Choosing your engagement ring requires more consideration than anything else you’ll ever wear.  No other piece of clothing or jewelry will stay with you as long, or carry as much meaning as this tiny symbol of fidelity.

It means you must weigh the importance of exciting trends with the timelessness of classic beauty.  It means you have to commit to a particular design, and live with it, even as styles come and go.

When a bride comes into our store, we have an obligation to help her make a good decision.  After all, it’s the first thing people will ask to see for the next several months. And over time, her engagement ring and wedding band will influence nearly every jewellery choice she makes.

Above all, choose a ring that suits your personality. Some are more comfortable with a daring look.  For others, a more traditional design is more suitable.  Where couples can run into trouble is trying to fit the bride to an existing ring – perhaps one that’s been passed down from another generation. Although we love to honour our heritage, the likelihood of that ring being a perfect match is fairly low. After all, there’s nothing more personal than your engagement ring.

In situations where an heirloom ring is being passed down, we often recommend resetting the centre-stone.  This allows the history of the original diamond to remain, while respecting the wishes and feelings of the bride, who deserves an engagement ring that is truly her own.

Before you choose your ring, you have to choose your jeweller. Look for one with a hands-on approach to customer service.  Today’s brides are interested in knowing where a diamond comes from.  Canadian diamonds are the most responsibly sourced stones in the world.  If you want to feel confident in where your diamond came from, ensure you have a variety of Canadian diamonds available at the store you choose.

Above all, choose a store that makes you feel comfortable. Your engagement ring is a lifelong commitment.  You’ll appreciate a store that’s also in it for the long-haul.  Ask about what sort of services are included in the price of your ring.  Regular inspections and cleaning keep your ring looking beautiful and will satisfy warranty and insurance requirements.

Your engagement ring is a part of your life from now until forever. Good choices now will give you confidence in your decision for years to come.

Not exactly the new kid in town, DC Taylor Jewellers is a family business founded in 1895. Today, the tradition is carried on by brothers Creighton, Paul, Jeff and John Taylor. Their small-town roots have developed to intercity expansion as the Taylor brothers continue to grow the business from Owen Sound, into Collingwood, and their latest success story in Barrie.

DC Taylor takes a personal interest in every customer. You’re more than likely to find a member of the Taylor family on the scene and are proud to have the fifth generation working in the stores now.

Custom jewelry can be created for our customers in-house. For example, a bride looking for a one-of-a-kind engagement ring can meet directly with the designer, collaborate on the details and end up with a ring that’s absolutely perfect. It’s those personal touches that make DC Taylor worthy of a special trip.

“There’s a tremendous satisfaction in helping a bride find the engagement ring she’ll wear for the rest of her life. Or helping someone choose a spectacular gift for a loved one. These are life-changing moments in the lives of our customers and their families, and we’re honoured to play our small part in them.”
